2026 ARTICLE 1: RANKING TEAMS, 2026 CONFERENCES, AND REGIONS BASED ON 10 YEARS OF NCAA TOURNAMENT RESULTS

For some New Year's fun, here are how teams, conferences based on their memberships for 2026, and the four geographic regions rank when considering NCAA Tournament performances over the last 10 years -- 2016 through 2025 (including Covid-affected 2020).  To keep the system simple, I simply award a team 1 point for each NCAA Tournament win, so that the maximum points a team can earn in any year is the champion's 6 points.

TEAMS

In general, without paying too much attention to the exact order of the teams and recognizing there are exceptions where teams have improved or declined significantly over the 10 years, a lot of teams are in the ranges I expect to see for the upcoming year.

To be on the list, a team must have won at least 1 NCAA Tournament game.

CONFERENCES

NOTE: Since conference memberships are based on teams' 2026 conferences, the PacTwelve numbers are for the teams that will be members of that conference in 2026.

REGIONS

NOTE:  As you can see, there is a big gap between the South and the Middle regions.  If you were to look at the average ranks of teams in the regions, however, the South and Middle would be very close.  This reveals a particular characteristic of the South region:  (1) It is very strong at the top, thus  producing excellent NCAA Tournament results, whereas (2) It is very weak at the bottom, thus producing only a middling average rank for the entire region.
